Kalahari Shepherds Tree

Having spent nearly two months in the Kalahari desert in South Africa, I came across this incredibly beautiful old Shepherds tree (Boscia albitrunca).
According to the owner of the farm, the tree must be at least a thousand years old. I took the opertunity to grab some motion time lapse shots
of this old beauty. Apparently, the roots of this magnificent tree can be brewed into a nice coffee or a porrage.

Some of the amazing shooters in attendance were Vincent Laforet, Carson Garner, John Carr, Ben Wiggins, Mike Flores, Drew Walker, Shawn Reeder, Dustin Kukuk, Nilo Merino Recalde, and Mike Goveia.

The group worked alongside astro-timelapse master, Tom Lowe as he captured insane DSLR motion controlled shots for his upcoming film, TimeScapes.

Kessler University sponsored the trip and I shot a BTS of the few days were were there. Big thanks to Eric Kessler for putting this trip together.

Augrabies – Floods in an arid world

Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Namakwa land, the Augrabies National Park is home to one of the biggest waterfalls in South Africa. But what particularly drew my attention on this occasion was that due to the floods that other parts of South Africa experienced, I knew that all that water was going to pass through the Orange River and eventually reach the Augrabies Falls. 6800 cumecs were expected over the next few days. I packed the cameras and headed to the park.

Over the course of a week, I managed to shoot various time lapses and video of the falls and the area. Temperatures soared above 40°C so early morning and late afternoons were the only times safe to shoot. This provided for amazing lighting conditions. Especially after the regular afternoon thunderstorms.

This spectacular scene unfolded after such a thunderstorm moved through the Augrabies National Park. As the sun started breaking through the clouds, surreal rays of light and rainbows started forming against the dark thunder clouds as a back drop. I was in the right place at the right time. This scene is included in the time lapse video below. A local travel magazine WEG/GO wanted to feature the time lapse video on their website of the falls over the few days that I was there.

One of my favourite time lapse pass times is to set the camera up at dusk and let it run for a couple of hours until way after sunset. I can then sit back with a good bottle of vino and enjoy the unfolding scene. This one was also shot in Augrabies Falls National Park. Quiver trees are very abundant in the arid area and have adapted quite well.
